conversation sometimes worth recording with Josh Johnson and Tommy jacket it's a daily talk show 128 brought to you by 711 car park that's where that's where I am right now really good for good for Jay that's great for Jay and I just ran into and got a coffee fact we're giving them too much promotion and they're not even paying us
0:36
you know I think we should give we should have given that we don't have sponsors we should just mention companies that we like today's episode is sponsored by quad lock yeah
0:45
if you need a if you if you've got an iPhone even a any smartphone device you can attach your phone to a bike bike is one of the the bike mounts for know what I think in the cost I think there's like something about good people that have a business that then just just multiplies you success because I like the guys from called lock but now I've started like checking motorbikes and checking box that go past trying to see if there's a quad lock on it. And it's And so yeah, it's like if you can infiltrate people's minds like that you've you've done pretty well and it's it's an iPhone case it's a mounting thing via thing if I've turned into a game
1:29
well I actually saw one in London at the cafe I got really excited I was with a friend and I said that's a quad lock and she's like the bike what's a what's a quad I'm like no the thing on the bike the blue bit and the wireless reacting you think that I I invented it but there were the quad luck guys listen to the show. And there they
1:53
were sending him stickers we've got that has the all the sticker stuff going. The sticker promotion has finished yet. So anyone who was sent us an email and we'll get it we'll get the students to send out that's going to happen later this week. Or if not early next week. Are you
2:08
are you a name dropper?
2:12
I I get anxiety that sometimes I might be a like, I might drop a name. Yeah. unintentionally. Or I feel like I do it because it's sort of I never want to do it for the reasons that people named draw a you do you think you're a name drop? Well,
2:28
I think I've perfected the craft of finding the moment. So I would say a name dropper is the person that can't help themselves and will like just bring it out. It has no filter, which I reckon you'll be there at some time. At some point in some stages of your life you've been was I
2:48
was a was it Do you think I'm in now? I mean, I did. I feel like when I mentioned the rental car story, I said it was Sylvia, Jeff, probably completely.
3:00
But you know what, I think it's actually it's, it's not coming from a bad place. you dislike it an excitable person that just wants to just throw out so much information to give so much context about everything you're talking about. So sometimes that's where it comes in. But I found I find it's like I said, it's like a challenge. Okay, so where are you from? Oh, shipping. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. And then I just work out a moment to be able to just say something Oh, you live there for a while what we do our thanks for asking Yeah, or be makeover I do land or
3:36
I constantly do that. I you know, that is I think that's different is the difference between nine dropping and being a connector and I thrive on being a connector. I was actually talking to a guy who's in Texas who does the support for the the hosting we use for our podcasting. And we ended up I ended up checking him out on Twitter and being like, oh, he works with a guy who I've made a film on. Yeah, and
4:05
then we started talking, I asked him about that. And then it turns out that all of these people I've made films on he knows all of them. And we're going to catch up when I'm in the States. I mean, that's, that's really when name dropping becomes powerful, when you can actually link it with the link to the connecting part of things. It's, that's great. Yeah,
4:27
I'm big on that. I remember the one that stung for me was I remember being extremely bad. I don't know why I was so embarrassed. But I remember
4:37
like I I've definitely gone through a stage of being the suburban kid that every every connection is exciting. And I think that it probably only it only subsided probably
4:52
once. I'd been at invite her for a while. So even when I was at the radio station, I think I must have still had it in me. Because I remember there was this time where I was like
5:05
I had started working at invite and I just finished working at the radio station with faith angels and Sam Kev who is the Executive Producer instead of would look after content at the national level for the radio station. I went to his office to help him with this presentation that he was working on and I said to him Ah, man, you wouldn't believe it. The person I'm sitting next to at the office is the sister in law of UC
5:41
and that was about the long it was almost like we had an ice dn line where there was probably a 10 second delay because Sam just sort of looked at me he's like oh yeah and I was like isn't that crazy I mean like because I've just come from radio and now I'm bloody I just can't get away from it
6:00
it's pretty pretty common yeah
6:02
I Amy has told me before that she has tried she's seen the moment she said to me that you're good at not not dropping in things when there's not when they're not necessary because like he totally read that wrong right the moment Teaneck something and drop someone's name definitely wasn't the right time it yeah it's all about timing but I think there's nothing wrong with it I think if you but I think more how many friends would someone who is of status have versus how many people would actually say that they I'm good mates with that guy I'm good friends with him
6:41
well i think that I already have a complex around and we've discussed it I I met meet someone for 10 minutes and I'll be like where best night my good night my good mate and you know and and so that's where I think that maybe with age I've
7:03
removed some of that and realize like like we've spoken about on the show at the time that I friended a guy who was a cinematographer on Facebook and then he deleted me a few months later and I decided to send him an email just to ask why which we still i think i think we still need to do something about that there was there was going on probably seven music guys is great
7:27
Oh that's right we read out the email that you sent him at some point yeah and he never wrote back so it's still up in the air you still it's really I asked
7:36
him if he had LinkedIn I just said to want to want to want to be on LinkedIn together
7:43
but even I noticed this with the Airbnb guy Ryan like pretty young I I go hard on asking questions so even
7:52
yesterday morning woke up we sorry it was out front I will leaving for the day going to a like and
8:01
I said to Mr What are you excited about at the moment and it's like he had an existential existential existential I don't even know how said the world he basically had a crisis in front of me because like it was probably too big of a question to ask yeah and he really thought about it's like are you know yeah there's a lot on
8:20
I'm taking the the cat to the vet
8:25
the show next good chap bro walked off on him saying like the way we do but I've told you know leading with big questions yeah what's the best part of your day Holy fuck I haven't even thought about that I just need to take a shit that's probably what most people think
8:42
he's really interesting too though I think that when I can take from people he's like he's an anthropology anthropology fuck I can't say anything at the moment anthropologist right and take
8:53
a leaf out of mind so commit to the fuck up say whatever you want and own it
8:58
so I think anyway think he's named Bob and
9:04
anthropological anthropologists
9:08
now you anthropology
9:12
anthracite Bray anthropologist. You know I said
9:18
I don't know if you did I'm pretty sure I did a bow tie the daily talk show confirm
9:24
yeah we know when pronunciation goes through email how that Trevor lungs and yeah very true but um. No but he is super interesting dude has a book
9:36
and it like looks like I'm gonna get on the Kindle and then get a hard copy when we get back to Australia because there's something cool about where it were staying at an Airbnb where the guys written a book on Tuscany he's like and then I said to him I was like are we thinking of cooking like while we're here but we don't know how to cook Are there any cooking lessons around he said either all being Italian but he said he create he's got a website and he's done a bunch like a cooking videos so we're gonna look at him on there. But the interesting thing was
10:13
I just feel like from day one I was asking these big questions and it took him a while to come around like as we were as we we had our suitcases going to our
10:28
to the apartment which was only been two minutes I was like so like how did you end up in Toronto he's like are too long story and I was like this this guy Why does it mean so CD? Wait, why is he here? And that it just turns out it was it was literally the long story did he tell it to you?
10:47
Yeah yeah he went to eat Yeah, I won't I won't. I won't go and tell the whole story but it was interesting so
10:57
what's his name Lawrence from my office fact he was telling me Larry it yet he was telling me that he was filming awaiting the other week and the waiting were it was a Jehovah's Witness I guess that's their their faith was similar to Christians. The Christian faith
11:17
I guess if we're really trying to simplify but the point being
11:22
like, really, really, really simplify it you wouldn't maybe you might be right.
11:26
Well, you wouldn't. Yeah, like I mean, there's they've got their beliefs that are separate from a Christian church or an Anglican Church. So it's like have a sect
11:37
of a sect of Christianity
11:39
also they're a Christian denomination denomination or
11:45
what denomination the Christian
11:48
don't don't nomination and so to me, not lets us have a rule that we don't ride is, it's fucking embarrassing.
11:57
So they have a Bible and they say, they think that like the big I think God is Jehovah. And anyhow,
12:07
what's his name? Chris Lawrence was filming this wedding, any any kind of didn't know that they were Jehovah's. So you see the Jehovah's Witness the people standing on the corners, and they have to rack up these hours. I'm very much generalizing this, I wreck up these hours of like devotional like spreading the word about Jehovah. And you'd say them, it's like, it's, it's a really interesting thing, because they're in a way I am. His mom lives in Sydney. There's like a massive, Jehovah's Witness following or church. And so there's all these young people on the streets, sort of just standing around for hours and hours, just trying to talk to people about the faith. And anyway, long story short, he's filming this Jehovah's Witness waiting Jehovah's wedding and he didn't know that that's what they were. And then he asked someone, and then he worked out that everyone there followed this faith. And then he spoke to the DJ. And he's like, Yeah, man. Yeah, I'm a fellow. It's Jehovah. And he said this the music because they know letter here naughty words, or have parts of songs that are talking about, you know, grinding and bumping. And so he said this a lot. It's almost like a Spotify subscription service where they remove not just bad words, but like, sentences that to pay replace them now, he said, it's kind of this weird mix. He was hearing it and he's like, I can hear that so it's like full Nikki Menashe. But just without the sentences that makes sense about you know what she's doing with her ass. And so it's it's probably actually more like, what I am a karaoke. You know, anyway
13:55
hit and that sort of thing. They just like it's just someone side random happens. As you
14:01
said, there's a subscription. I can't find it for the I've been looking for it. Not that I want to get involved. I'm sure if you just went on to Spotify. What do you might have meant we can you just go and Spotify and search like Jehovah's Witness songs like play he reckons It was a separate He said it was this is the way expanded the large it's like Spotify and you pay subscription and you've got all the latest songs just didn't know what
14:28
was that you know it stinks of it. You know it stinks. Song go. You think this is just what song goaltending transition what was song.
14:38
So song goal was my old employers attempted a streaming streaming service. I remember being I was just a junior guy
14:49
sitting in this meeting is these executives were doing this big presentation. And they they talked about what they were going to do differently. And now saying how
14:58
those can be exclusive content that only people would be able to see from our radio station. So it was exclusive but men that none of the other stations would be on there. But my favorite bit was that they were going to be leading with visual advertising on our screens. And so the question that I OS is I might if people are listening won't Won't they have their around the phones in their pockets? You could just say the executive just been like, shut the fuck up is How is it? We've just been a lot of r&d. We don't need your bullshit right now. Who's this
15:34
space is a web go poking holes in our business model. Yeah.
15:38
Anyway, song goal. But the other thing too about song goal is why I was sort of rolling my eyes a little bit. It's a team thing. It's okay. Talk about x employers like this. I guess it's okay. We've got big media company. We don't need to we don't need to be high. Well, if you
15:54
if you're looking for a job, probably not. But if you're pointing out that you You are a little sheet and I think that's okay. That's what you're doing. Yeah, yeah.
16:01
But the thing was that the reason why I thought was funny was because Sanga was a rebrand of a product code anubis.fm, which was started by Sony in response to Spotify as a way to say, Hi, we're gonna This is a solution that's good for the labels and all that. So the Spotify out I need this. Yeah, so yeah,
16:24
Spotify was already out, it's been out for a long time overseas. And because I had son is in the early days ads on us, probably 2011, and there was no Spotify in Australia or anything like that. Because I was working, I had a tech blog. So I would review these products and and Sonos had I basically had this crack forum Rhapsody which was really good. It was like streaming like a Spotify heaps and heaps of songs. But then Australia released their first one which was anubis.fm Yeah. Which was specific to sign off. Anyway, that was song Google was actually just Anubis rebranded. And so just following it along I was just like this just it just stunk of we need to respond and we need to do something to be in this space but it didn't feel like it was it felt felt like there was a disconnect between
17:28
my reality of what I'd seen within the space and what they were doing
17:33
well yeah it's it's becoming I mean yeah I think it would probably be a good idea to bring a whole bunch of people like you young little smart asses in and get them to try and poke holes in in your current business I was talking to our house with you was talking to Jules land name drop of and are saying here we got it. I was driving listening to the radio because we were discussing radio and I said they hooked something they said that they've got something coming up in the next 15 minutes. And it was a piece of news and I wanted to know that piece of news right now. So I pulled over and pulled out my phone search that it's like, you can't hold you can't hook something coming up in 15 minutes in today's is no one wants to wise who sent it recently. It was like the kid was saying, why would I listen to why would I Why can't we skip this song? I want to listen to what I want to listen to them. Why Why would I stay in the car and listen to this shit. So funny. So yeah,
18:37
I think and also the thing is, I think that the the weakness in the position that I think I've been in is being a being a geek and being someone who like I was 14 years old listening to podcasts on like an iPod Classic when before was on iTunes. And so you see say these like trends and then you say people who haven't been there at the start talking about these trends with some level of authority and I think that that's what sort of get and that's almost the reason why I love podcasts and I've had a few podcasts over the years but the reason that I probably was reluctant to you know to start one again is because I feel like this there is so much hype associated with shit yeah and it's based on and it's based on this timeline which feels like it's what like takes way longer than what it should I remember I've got a Am I was looking at old files and I had a USB stick from 2005 early 2005 and it was a website that I had to make in my it class and it was about I said podcasting and it was like all about podcasts and have this is the future and it was like I spelled A p o d dash casting but anyway it was just yeah i mean it's it's sort of a bit of a bit of a hashtag brag of night This is fucking nothing's this isn't new I've been doing a quick question is did you have with them
20:17
yeah you see that you did you use lime wire
20:22
yeah used to before line why I was using cuz I Napster but you don't have yet used Napster
20:30
and yeah I remember downloading like the Austin Powers theme song for um. off that but there was also the thing with wind wire is you would only have a download I think with lime why a lot line why a lot light because I'm the other ones you could get like a bit of viruses but I do remember with cuz I would we got some idea sell at our house and it was
21:00
man I'm really coughing today we had a gig of data a month that's what I like allocation was for the whole idea sell only ship which is like pretty which is pretty crazy when you think about now but anyway I am I went crazy on because our and racked up a bill just purely by uploading because we were downloading and uploading because I was like p2p and I just had it all along. So I was really excited. And
21:27
it was over 1000 our phone bill like our internet bill was over $1,000. Holy shit. So I saw I see I saw Derek today who's been on the podcast as the scooter yesterday. Sure. And he's actually and he's going to amazing podcast.
21:42
He said to me that he yet what now with Terry and Juan. He said to me went out and said I not and he's I don't know how it happened. But in my pocket my phone to throw 50 gigabytes of data. It cost me 400 bucks
21:58
as a dairy fee they give hi Derek there has to be an explanation for this. It doesn't just happen. Yeah, yeah.
22:06
He's like I blew up and Telstra call them. Yeah,
22:09
I went. I went off at them. As I'm a you've obviously turned on. Like Sam, you just got a new computer. And there must be some kind of like iCloud. So he's whole entire phones sinking to the cloud was sinking to Dropbox through his data far out. I mean, that's been a problem with that's been a problem. Even with my internet here, like the tethering like I keep getting texts in Italian to go. Like I spent two hours the other day working out how to sign up to Vodafone like they're like it's hard enough fucking signing up to Optus or Telstra on like online. Yeah. And so I had to do it in Italian and got it all set up. And then was loading money onto so what what kind of data
22:55
what what kind of a plan so if someone just flew into Australia, I mean this Okay, plan the internets pretty slow here. What are you? What are you getting?
23:04
So like the I get it was about 2020 years,
23:10
and I get 10 gigs of data. And I use that within two days though. 10 gain two days. But the thing that Yeah, so it's it's a fair bit. But the thing my mistake was relying on that rather than connecting to Wi Fi at any moment. But I should, should be more. So that's what I've been doing now. Like we're talking right now through Wi Fi, rather than using 4g or 3g. But yeah, it's it's interesting. I haven't one thing I want to do some more research on ease the
23:45
roaming. So like specifically in Europe, I think the plants have gotten better now. So you can just get a sim in the UK and then you can use it in Italy in different parts of your luck. But that's not
23:58
what I like the universe saying. Yeah, cuz you've changed the number of feet. Oh, yeah, yeah,
24:01
I've just been updated. I've just been dying. I feel like bang for buck. My view on roaming is that typically you end up with like second tier carriers, once you go to different places. It's like How often would you land in Australia if you're roaming from overseas and then end up on Telstra and so all
24:22
smuggling drugs as well you need to change out that number
24:27
because I've got a lot of burners lot of bonus
24:31
we got a we tried the Instagram or you tried the Instagram feature where you can ask a question well, I thought I should
24:38
everyone was doing it. The function came out a couple of days ago and like, and it was just like, it is pretty indulgent. Just like Hey, guys, you got a question for me. And so there's all these just individuals doing it. So what why I'm it's just like, are you going to buy a house
24:56
like, right, well, random random stuff, so I just put it up to you what
25:01
it reminds me of
25:04
a website that was probably maybe 2005 2006?
25:10
Actually, no, no, no, it would have been lighter than that might have been like, oh, seven, they were Oh, eight. There was with some time in the 2000s, there was a site called three words.me, which was actually started by a guy that I know who lives in the US and human eye and a couple of other teenagers. When we were like, probably 2005, we did a podcast called teen technology where we used I chat audio and we recorded I can't find copies of it anywhere. But basically, it was a technology show and we'll just these teenagers who had found each other from around the world was called teen tech online. But um, anyway, his his name at the time was 20 and he China to mark But Mark created a
26:06
website called three words.me, which I don't think is around anymore but it was bought by like, a couple hundred thousand dollars. She's on that he was only it was only 17 at the time. And what you could do is you could send people a link on social media and say, describe me in three words. It was like played into all that stuff that we love. It's just like, what are people saying about me? Like, how do people describe me? So it feels a little bit like that? Yeah, lock it in. So we did get a go
26:41
I was I was just gonna say we did get a few um, we got to two questions. We got one that said that was from a that said curious as to how this shows up on the daily talk show Instagram back end,
26:54
which I then had to look at, and I accidentally added an M that wasn't meant to be the second people actually see, we did
27:02
know you can say well, so we can answer them if we can you hear that. Now.
27:05
I'm just
27:06
putting that I'm just putting the microphone on it.
27:10
That's actually one thing that I love about Serrano is every hour the bells go off you know, for the amount of you know, itself it's five o'clock it dings five times so good in the morning because like I'll be waking up and we have the the jaw though the window open out into the valley and we can just like wake up to the light and I'd literally like line but I don't look at my phone in the morning. I'll just be like waiting in queue and the dings and
27:39
smell like right now. What's it what's the A smelling luck
27:43
let me let me just get up out of my seat and just give it a good sniff hang on
27:49
the fireplace in your room
27:52
yeah there was a fireplace yet it to be honest it smells like nothing refresh super day I'm a bit yeah no it's actually it's when I think about fresh I think of cool it's not really it's already quite warm. It's what time is it here it's like 9am 5pm
28:10
in in Melbourne on Thursday and yeah it's um it's already warm so yeah but it does get really it gets not like people are smoking meats and shit so it's like got all that smoky smell which is really good site fucking sovereign. He'll have you seen the video of Mark Zuckerberg smoking made and he he did like
28:31
alive. They cut the Edison. He did a live feed that went for like two hours. And then that someone just went through cut out all the times that he said smoked meats, I love smoke me the best thing about smoking meat, smoked meat, smoked meat, it's very funny. Anyway, so the question we got we got two questions.
28:48
One from geek evangelist, also known as Russell case. Who asks HS p or burger What's your answer? burger?
29:00
Wait, yeah, it's
29:01
a burger. I haven't had that many Hillel snack packs in my life. And you can get just shitty ones. This Timmy shitty ones out there. That may be the main. I feel like if I was, I think that I would prefer a Jimmy Chang over an ASP and Russkies and I've talked about that when I come back to Melbourne we're going to get a Jimmy Chang very cute isn't one but if he dies in a calendar to have a few changes yeah far I love it to me Chad and
29:28
I gotta go pick up my son but tomorrow yeah we've got a guest on the show
29:34
yeah we we have Jordan Evans on the show she is the she created mingle, which is like a seasoning company. Really cool. And she's done it in like a really sick why it was awesome. Chatting with her. So yeah, that that is this tomorrow. We did have one other question, which was from
29:53
TEST TEST doc who asks, Who do you think will win the final of the FIFA World Cup? I'm gonna guess Croatia if they're in it. Is that a thing? Well, I don't know actually. who's won a bit it's it's finished. England didn't win it are really the whole thing's initiative FIFA World Cup. Let me just World Cup FIFA World Cup. We just want my guess is Croatia.
30:18
Croatia. Right. Yeah, crop anyway. Semi Finals. Croatia. Croatia did beat England. So now they're out. And France.
30:26
One in Belgium? Zero. So that was yesterday. So I think it might be Croatia France in the final. Yeah,
30:33
I think Croatia is gonna win maybe brain I should head to crop we've been talking about going to Croatia. Yeah, I'll
30:39
go for it. And maybe we'll go there would be a good vibe. Actually. I'll go against to go France. always there when the soccer they go mad. When I was in Paris, too. Easy guy. There was some soccer on and far out. I just went bananas for it. So like, you know, better Spirit be the hood and love different bap bap bap bap they're too busy on but it's adding Croatia just sailing around
31:04
the I've recommended Gawker we yeah it's very cool. But Bray just before you go Bray has been messaging with a girl who is a model who modeled for braise old company that she worked for, because they would hire a lot of times for people in in Europe and style anyway. Yeah, she's based in Croatian. She's like, I you can have got like a apartment that you can stay as it's like a small little village in Croatia. We might end up doing that I'd be fine. Take that up.
31:32
Anyway.
31:34
Sorry. Sorry. Danny for the travel.
31:38
Probably not raising too much about my slight mention of travel to Delhi. Talk to everyone. So Jordan Evans tomorrow. She's She's a legend. And please check out that the one thing with mingle seasoning, which I didn't realize is how fucking big they are. It's not like a little shaky thing that you see with Herbes. It's like massive you get so much out of it. I've been smashing we go get where you're giving you going. Why. So I took the whole box chichi,
32:06
what have you been putting it on veggies? This is amazing chocolate one that's like it's like a cash cow
32:15
sea salt coconut. It's and you just literally can put it on ice cream or like, you know, theory it's, it's really it's really, really good. You'd like it. Yeah,
32:27
but I wouldn't I call it today to talk to everyone. Yeah, we'll see you Monday for a regular show. Tomorrow is the chat with Jordan toucher.
