Basil’s advice on the show

What can you wear to stay comfortable and improve circulation on a long flight?

Wear compression 'skins' underwear/leggings on long flights for comfort and to help with blood circulation, pairing them with shorts and thongs if needed.

How should you approach travel disruptions like delays or bad seating?

Have a plan for the flight but accept that things can still go wrong (delays, bad seat neighbours); figure out what personally works for you and expect it will take a few days to adjust after landing.

Should you work for free early in a creative career?

Yes — if you have no track record or proven skills, you can't expect to be paid like someone experienced, so taking on free work (as Basil did by offering to film Jake and Amir for free) is a reasonable way to build a portfolio and get a chance.

How do you make podcast conversations feel more genuine and interesting?

Resist the urge to self-edit or filter your first instinctive reaction (the 'first thought') before speaking, since that unfiltered, sometimes vulnerable or 'dumb'-sounding material is usually what makes for a more engaging, honest conversation.

Stories Basil told

Partying at Princeton University, 2012

Ep 502▶ 3:18

Basil describes ending up at midnight on the Princeton University football oval during a 2012 US trip because he was friends with the soccer club president who had keys to the venue.

The hillbilly wedding bottle-smash

Ep 502▶ 10:33

Basil recounts second-shooting a wedding in rural Michigan for a friend's brother where the bride, reeking of alcohol, grew impatient waiting for the first dance and smashed a full bottle of Jack Daniel's on the dance floor before storming off.

Justin's wedding photography burnout

Ep 502▶ 14:38

Basil describes his friend Justin, a Bendigo wedding photographer booked 18 months in advance, who went through a divorce and lost faith in the institution of marriage after years of shooting other people's weddings.

Surrounded by four babies on a 15-hour flight

Ep 502▶ 45:53

Basil recalls a long-haul flight where he was seated near four babies and, despite having noise-cancelling headphones himself, watched the people around him without them struggling through the ordeal.

Questions these interviews answer

Drawn from the episode transcripts.

What did the hosts discuss about airplane fuel reserves before flying to LA?

Tommy, Josh and guest Basil Gerard speculated about how much extra fuel a commercial flight carries as a buffer for a 14-hour Melbourne-to-LA flight, eventually revealing the real buffer is about 45 minutes, and discussed scenarios like diverting to Hawaii or landing on water (referencing the Tom Hanks film about the Hudson River landing).

What wedding story did guest Basil Gerard tell on The Daily Talk Show episode 502?

Basil Gerard described filming his friend's brother's wedding in rural Michigan, where the bride arrived smelling of alcohol and later smashed a full bottle of Jack Daniel's on the dance floor after her new husband was late for their first dance.

From episode 502→
What tips do Tommy, Josh, Basil and Mason give for staying comfortable on long international flights?

Suggestions include bringing a neck pillow, thongs, lip balm, eye drops and a toothbrush (Josh), wearing compression 'skins' underwear (Basil), sleeping through the whole flight with noise-cancelling headphones and an audiobook (Tommy), and using a jet-lag app called Time Shifter plus melatonin spray and timed bright-light exposure (Mason).

From episode 502→
What are the Five Love Languages and how do the hosts apply them to themselves?

The Five Love Languages (words of affirmation, quality time, physical touch, gifts, acts of service) are discussed as a framework; Tommy and Basil conclude Josh is strongly words-of-affirmation (despite claiming to be a 'gift giver'), while Tommy identifies as a mix of words, touch and quality time.

How did guest Basil end up going by 'Basil Jarrod' instead of his real surname?

Basil's real surname is Curtis, but when Facebook arrived he wanted to be less easily taggable/searchable for a 'fun uni experience', so he started using Jarrod as an alternate surname online, which stuck through Instagram and his podcast, The Process with Basil Jarrod.
