Wait a minute
0:11
conversation, sometimes worth recording with Josh Janssen and Tommy jacket. It's a daily talk show. Episode 185 Live from Times Square in New York City. And if you can't
0:24
tell because it's seriously noisy Here
0:27
it is. It's got a good vibe lot of people around. So this is
0:30
our first. This is probably our biggest audience of people that are in front of us and the largest amount of people that aren't here for us.
0:37
Because it's the three of us table taking selfies. I'd like to say with us in it that they sort of they going for sort of more the stairs. Yeah, this
0:46
is so cool. So this is the first episode within our America tour. Because for the month of October, we're pretty much going to be releasing episodes from America from the United States.
1:00
You can see this rap music behind me. There's a like wave right next to the road in Times Square. There's the what what area would you call this stage is that is it got a specific name?
1:11
So if you've ever come to Times Square, there's like, a set of bleachers, or like, you know, like a movie theatre. Yeah. And we're right there. This I would say this is like the centre of Times Square. Like the bit where everyone comes to and tries to take
1:24
a photo. It's got an overload of lights. That's what's perfect. Like we've got Bry live streaming right now, as we're doing an Insta storey. But there's like the just the brightness from these la day. Yeah,
1:39
there's so many colours so much going on. I tell you what, I came here in 2012. And there's there's less selfie sticks than there were I think it's like the death of the selfie stick. There's more gimbals like people holding those, like, steady cams
1:55
for the mobile phone. That's already tried the gimbals it only just hit me. This is the first episode back with you. And I just Yeah,
2:03
yeah. And so we got here on Saturday night. So literally a day ago. And it's I'm pretty tired.
2:12
Yeah. What was it? What was the so you flew from Melbourne to Los Angeles and then Los Angeles to New York.
2:18
Yeah. So, so funny on the on the because we Yeah, we did the Melbourne to LA is like 14 hours. What happened? Because I've always like, gone really soft on utilising the call button.
2:32
Like I don't never use the coal button in my life.
2:35
I've always well. I was that person that was like now I don't want to annoy them. I don't want to interrupt them. They've got enough, you know, enough on Yeah, as it is. But this flight, I was like, I'm taking advantage of this. I'm going to dry. I'm going to drink and I'm going to like when the lights are out and I'm doing what I want. I'm going to get another bottle of wine. But the what the reason I stopped after five bottles,
3:00
anyone?
3:02
Is it a glass?
3:03
to standard drinks per mini bottle? I don't know. How many
3:07
five of them. She had 10 glasses of wine? Well, I don't I think
3:12
a standard drink doesn't equate to a glass. It's just a standard drink. Drink of alcohol within a bottle. So had 10 standard drink so you off your fucking face by the fourth, I should have stopped. Because each time I pressed it, he would come out and say can I help you? And then I'd say Can I have some of that? cab says yeah, I need say sure thing and then go back in and get get the bottle. Come back at say three times. He did that. By the fourth time. You will help me myself. And he just handed me the bottle or sure as
3:44
their neighbours. I can't believe that they don't shut you off. Oh, did you get the vibe that you're going to be shot? No,
3:49
I could have kept going. I think it's like I'm not a loose unit I used to be. But I wasn't seeming drunk. And I think if I was on a fully trip, and I was saving that balmy, but my they probably had my nickname is cabs have just crazy. And I press the call button of the seat that was next to me. That was Vikings. Because I was like I'll show them trying to bring it out a cat said you're actually
4:16
you're asking like the people like three rows down. Can you just press the button? Get the one and give it to me? No, I press the button. Yeah, next to me. So they wouldn't assume that I was the PC with the flight was a any sort of strategy to it? No.
4:31
No, I actually was gonna have one. And then I had one. And then I was like, I'm having another and then had some good food. And then I was a disease. I was like, getting a bit of a buzz while editing. And I was going to keep going at 345
4:48
as a slave who drink like I couldn't even imagine doing that with code zeros where you had brain
4:55
returns pretty quickly from drinking more than one Coke Zero.
4:58
But do you think like would you feel weird if you went to a restaurant and got say three coke zeros
5:04
sitting? I think it's a waste doing anything for you. At least he's giving you a buzz with the
5:12
So would you have had like a litre of wine then?
5:16
Probably 200 mils maybe so you had a bad a
5:19
bad later. I actually surprisingly I went to sleep woke up felt completely fine. And so I went to get nine I didn't go again. That's good that that was my flight. You've been you've been flying for the last three months. Yeah.
5:34
The the lounge in Istanbul. That was a six hour layover. Yeah, six hours. And I just feel like I'd spent a lot of time sitting and sleeping. Yeah, but that's all good. It's good to be together.
5:49
Yeah. I loved touching down on American soil. Yeah. And just thinking about what's ahead for this month. And this is this is the starting point. Yeah. This is kicking off the momentum of the trip.
6:04
Yeah. For for the like, once we get when you know, we're in the stage for next few weeks. Then we get back to Melbourne and it's all into the new business big media company. Yeah, that's exciting. But we've got to get through the next two weeks.
6:18
It's just it is a sensory overload here. Yeah. Like you've stopped listening because you can eat too much interview. Or maybe it's my panic attack that's doing
6:25
my accent. Oh, am I okay?
6:28
It's it is a bizarre city, like New York. I know. You like growing up. You hear about what it's like you see it on Home Alone? If if you're Josh, you don't see it online because you haven't watched home alone. Please tell me if watch. I'm saying home alone. But But is it a base in New York?
6:43
I don't remember there is one where he like that he goes. Yeah. And he. It's so so cool. But this is I think the thing to keep in mind is this New York City right now this Time Square is so different to the other party out of New York, like where we are in Bowery. Yeah, normally, like where we're staying in our Airbnb. It's a very different vibe.
7:05
It's Um, so there's that it's like suburbs in the same suburb. Because new like the city of New York, it's quite big, but it's quite small at same time, like you can in a day you can sort of go up, up, up and down the whole thing. Enjoying yourself, but there's like little barrows like we're wasting Nolita north of Little Italy. That's what I didn't know. Literally, like it's, I said to the guy and the guy at the airport, the customs dude. I said that north of Little Italy. And he's like, what? I didn't even know that. Oh, really? Yeah.
7:41
This was going into that you were in LA. So he probably didn't know all the New York stuff.
7:46
Yeah, I guess America. So being that you might not
7:50
going north of Italy. I thought well, I didn't even know New York was close to Italy. Could it could have had that vibe. But we you know, coming in with the customs Bray actually got to put on the secondary screening lyst I didn't incident zone and go up. Yeah, well, the SS SS is what it said on the snorting slap slop. It's got that vibe. Now. It's like secondary screening something something. Anyway, it just meant that when we were getting on the flight to from Eastern ball to New York, we got like the full treatment mother asked these questions what we're doing checking out shoes, it do you think it could be the Neck Beard?
8:34
Well, that's what I know. man has ever grown his chest, all the way out to his face.
8:40
It's a bit extreme. But could you live here?
8:45
Oh, now it's a different thought. Because I think about my wife and having a baby. Yeah. And I've, like, just for the time that we've been here not long. I've been fascinated by looking at families, young families walking around the streets here. Because for one, it's super expensive. So I think, Okay, what what our situation is and how little money we have because of how expensive it is for a child. Yeah, imagine that here. And so I think fact mentioned growing up, and then I think about what life would be like for a baby. So it's like, not being selfish, because I'm like, for me to be sick. I'd be fucking cruising around making videos like going to all these cafes bars. But that's not the reality. So I think about the child and what would be, what kind of thinking and what you'd think the world is like by growing up in a place that is
9:36
positive and negative. How does it change your perception of Melbourne? Do you think just being here right now, what do you think about you
9:43
think Melbourne is busy? You haven't been to America? Like any of the main cities in America? Yeah, it's it is traffic here. The density of population and the difference in people? Yeah,
9:57
you know, so many more people, brace IDs. Athletic is a big thing here. But I think that what it is, is you just have a look around. I can't say anyone in athletic way right now in Times Square. It's obviously not the location for a jog. But it's also like, I think you see more of everything here. So you see more people in leggings and stuff, because there's just so many more people.
10:20
Yeah, yeah, I guess I'm looking forward to today's Sunday. Here in New York. I'm looking forward to tomorrow seeing the shift in like, people are actually living Yeah, they know. work because the vibe the vibe right now is it feels like a weekend it feels different. Yeah. And so I'm looking forward to sort of seeing how way here and what what that working week looks like.
10:43
We've got some guests lined up. We've got brand blanks. Yes. On Tuesday on tomorrow's episode,
10:49
you've probably who if you've listened Hamish Andy over their existence. You probably heard him slip celeb. Bringing the slaves he's done.
10:57
Thousands of celebrity Yes.
11:01
And I've got a friend Josh Peterman, who happens to be in town?
11:04
Yeah, he was the the male lead in Carole King's musical beautiful, which is wrapped up in Australia. It's
11:11
it's the fact that it's wrapped up the song. Oh, damn, I should have gone but I probably had like six months to go.
11:17
There's always the way with musicals, I feel is the
11:22
It feels like you have all of this time to go. But then you're like, oh, man, I didn't go. It's like how long was it on for like 24 months?
11:28
Yeah, they do long stints and this is the home of
11:32
musical theatre director will go Should we try and go to a Broadway? Like, what about if we do the what if we did a lottery thing? It's like 36 bucks. So the way that works brain? I did this one. We were in New York a few years ago for Book of Mormon. Yeah, go basically, an hour before I think it's an hour before the performance. What is it fun was it called it the SHOT Show. And you put your name and a hat. And they have a certain amount of tickets that are allocated, which are the best tickets in the house. So there was a dude that was running a Broadway show. And he basically said I want it to be open for you know, people who don't have as much money they like students and things like that to be able to afford to go and experience.
12:21
So what I do is I give some of the best
12:22
tickets to this lottery. So you rock up, put your name in, they pull your your name out those you will say that you get one or two tickets based on whether you've asked for one or two. And then you have to show ID you have to pay in cash and you
12:38
get to go to that it's a good ride off the table covered up with you know, doing something good for people,
12:45
but I think that would think that would be
12:47
if I was to buy 36 bucks the exchange rate where we are now in America. Last time I was here 2012 parody It was $1 and six cents or something. Yeah, who's so good and you explain what you we're doing in the US last time you're here very different. I was very single and very childless and very irresponsible,
13:08
childish,
13:10
I was the child I was he doing suck on that Jules land which was a web series that my friend Fitz he and I created all based around sharing our exploits and adventures. Being single and carefree with our mate who was you know, who had a lot of responsibility jewels, lon and to be honest, literally leverage is somewhat celeb status back then. So Joseph basically at home doing his radio geek.
13:39
Yeah, we're exploring the US.
13:41
Yeah, and it was at a time where I bought the editing software. Before we went away, cowboy, full cowboy really pay for it. Maybe two, or 350 was it fun if it's now 600 bucks was
13:56
the final cut pro 10 who's Final Cut Pro 10 Wow, so you must have ass gotten Yeah, that would have only just come out like on the prior I think 2011 it was super new and I had no idea what I'm doing but
14:07
somehow I fucking created seven videos that were actually pretty good now have like oh, there's a horse coming up behind you on my class.
14:16
Oh, it's very very
14:19
Hello. Hello.
14:23
Oh, he wants can't hold that. Yeah, we were just giving him a carrot now. Yeah, there we go. Cara you Oh, wow. We've got a carrot her feet. I should always carry carrots wherever we go.
14:41
That was very
14:42
unusual first time that we can say that I've fed a horse with a carrot on the daily talk show
14:47
this actually the horse seems happy when I was happy there was York City baby I'm happy
14:56
I just
14:58
saying incentive one more incentive rainy. Yeah. Geez, that was quite distracting. Was
15:03
he bitten off quite well. I think
15:04
he was he was coming up to the mic. But the funny thing is we've currently got the GoPro set up and you've attached it to sure yeah, and you held the shoe while filming that amateur breeze taking photos behind the scenes so she'll have a photo of me holding a shoe the horse which is perfect caption this on our on our read it
15:27
you managed to get braces show me That's right look at that. It
15:36
looks it I mean it doesn't look it doesn't look to us and we were confused but it breaks just showing us the final idea what's going on. But no so you you manage to leverage you just had what sort of camera did you have? We
15:52
had a 100
15:55
Yep. It's like a little time and he's the
15:58
reality of that camera. Only shot 23 frames per second so like that 2398 Yeah, so didn't even shoot the frame rate that we needed about five I didn't know what a frame rate was. Somehow it didn't factor well. Bizarre but
16:14
so that was always good point and shoot. It's smaller than like the G seven x.
16:20
Somehow cowboy the audio was holding an iPhone all the time.
16:23
Yeah.
16:24
And then I worked out there was a synchronised clips function. So I was like smashing that. And it sounded fine. It was actually amazing.
16:33
And so you managed it. What I love was you went to what was it Petaluma or no, it was
16:40
Katz's deli. No, no, no, no. wine region, Napa Valley, Valley, California and
16:46
France and you managed to just get like afraid to
16:50
it was at a time. So I reckon if we tried this now, tell us to get fact. Well, that would straightaway ask how many followers we have? Exactly. But in 2012 was still this fresh time. And I couldn't thought the states would be like, further ahead without knowing this stuff, man. Literally, we got into nightclubs for free. We got like, bad like, backstage. When I say backstage? I mean, like, behind cafes. Yeah. And like, you know, two is behind, getting getting really distracted. And we called up this one company. Yeah. And we said, hey, we've got an online TV show, which we did.
17:28
How many episodes? Did you done in that? Because you were editing them as you were three? Yeah,
17:31
we didn't even send them anything. We just said we're gonna we're gonna online TV show, we'd love to do a video and feature your business in there. And
17:39
so it was as manipulation at its base. But don't you feel the problem I have with that is when you rock out with the little point and shoot camera
17:46
night. I know,
17:49
these guys are gonna think it's
17:50
legit. And would you feel embarrassed doing it now? Do you think Oh, no.
17:54
Because I guess you've done i would i would be more aware of what it looks like. Yeah, but I would be of the understanding that it's not about that basically, that you
18:07
do with it. So type in the size of it. It's about what you do with it. And suck on that Josh land if you type it on YouTube, YouTube channel, but has one of the videos has over 100,000 300,000 Yeah. 500 extra. And uni was like, Hi. Yeah, it was make it big.
18:24
You know, they said, Can we use that in our lecture? Yeah. And I don't know what happened. But there was a moment where it just got it thousand views, you know, in a couple of days.
18:38
It literally looks three, three wheel car. Some real key factors that come out in you. Dude, there is cookie. So that's like it's the heated me of human nature, not the musical group. Just like, you've got everything you've got sort of advertising you've got, you know, people just like that. We just passed someone before. We had no clothes on. And she was
19:10
a sensory overload. Sorry, yeah, there's a new girl with painted breasts. Yes. That was very surprising. It's a sensory overload in that every one of your senses. smell. taste? smells like shit is how sweet is exploited. Yeah. So visually, like, you're seeing advertising, you're seeing the weirdest of things. You're smelling. It's got everything. I just smelled like cotton candy. Smells like.
19:38
And then it will smell like shit.
19:39
Yeah. Yeah. And then a horse will come behind and fat. Yeah. And then you're done. But it is just exploitation of senses. And
19:48
so Redis you're on board with Reddit?
19:51
Yeah, yeah, I'm aboard. So it can I tell you something. Yeah, Amy was listening to our shows in reverse. So she was going like, the lightest one. And then we go back a few and then we go back a few. And what she noticed was you being super on board with Redis. Yeah, this is it. This is as well. Like, gotta get on it. And then like, the previous step before that, yeah. And then the step before that, which was like you weren't that God? And I don't know. But you can hear a graduate with English names. You can hear the gradually
20:24
transfer is this like, tipping point? And
20:27
every episode maybe a little bit? I reckon maybe try it. James mentioned it not sure about read. Inside, right. So if you only seem to this forward, you've just heard the gradual the gradual sort of development of of the rate, which is great. It's a fucking flow on effect of this show. Yeah.
20:48
Good opportunity to get it when we have people like Brad blanks on the show. If he mentioned bits, we can put all that in. Yeah, it's a good opportunity to like he's got all these clips from these times. Like he's think I'd heard he'd done like, since 2006. have been recording every single video.
21:08
Wow. I wonder if he's actually kept them on hard drives.
21:14
And I will have to find out. So New York, where it here for a few days, then we fly to Los Angeles. We've got comedians lined up. Yeah, we're filmmakers. authors. Yeah, we're actually very pumped with some of the guests we have. Yeah, we're trying to keep that cool until we have them in the can. Yeah, I
21:32
think. I think that's the only way we can play it. We're
21:36
just going to do it by us. What's on what's on the food list? Let's talk food diary. A Shake Shack.
21:41
In and Out Burger. Cookies. Were in New York. So I presume known for cookies. I know there is a lot of cookie places. Some of the best like we've been eyeing off some food porn on Instagram. Yeah. And they look ridiculous principles here bullshit. You as in bad. Think like the there's all these little carts that sell food down every second straight and there's like they have a big, like novelty size prints or hot pretzels here. Yeah, I don't see many people other than tourists eating the pretzels. They may be local. So
22:15
I overdid it with the Shake Shack that we had before getting the shake, and the burger and the chips in our needs that it was just too much. That's classic New York. horns that you haven't gotten comfortable with the jaywalking yet? No, I don't know the deal. Well, when you're such a cowboy, it really surprises me die because you sort of like you yc at the lights is red. And I've got me who's meant to be sort of more sort of conservative. Yeah,
22:48
less of a cowboy. Not true. But one thing I will say is there's no one thing I will say is there is no
22:57
there is no sound.
22:58
So you have to be looking half the time I'm not looking at the little man, whereas sometimes the Melbourne is white until it goes Baba Baba, Baba, Baba, Baba, Baba. Yeah. And then I will start walking. So I'm a bit
23:10
freaked the trigger. The thing with being in the US is I do tend to my diet goes a little bit wacky. You mean you eat cheap food?
23:20
If you think of cherry flavour
23:23
Vox pop. Yeah, absolutely me. Can I get your thoughts on what you feel about New York City?
23:29
was busy and it's great.
23:31
Yeah, you from here. I'm from Minnesota. Amazing how the city bikes you have you written far?
23:37
Um, it's okay. It's just a little bit challenging with a lot of people, but it's manageable.
23:42
You doing an amazing job being in Times Square? Are you staying close by here? are you riding around? riding around?
23:51
Good luck. Be safe. Good Vox pop
23:54
up. So that was that we're on the equivalent of
23:58
it was the equivalent of an iRobot. Yeah, I was just I she felt safe because you were here is that we used to say she was looking to microphone. Yeah, we say? Yeah. Thanks. Do we have your permission to use that? She said yes.
24:15
Okay, but now I feel like I fairly normal here in New York City. Yeah.
24:20
Also that like the people that are here are also tourists within their own country. Like, Minnesota, I've met a few people seen a few people heard them talking and they're not from here, but they're just here for the weekend. Visiting is I mean, this is one of the coolest places on earth.
24:37
Yeah, it's it's so bizarre. I never get over this. I mean, not to bring it back to food too much. But this morning was a perfect vibe. Waking up. Yeah. Sit, you know, seven in the morning walking to a diner. Yeah, having all you can eat coffee. Yeah. But what did you ask? I said, Can I have some water? And she said no, I said, please. But she was just
24:59
a classic trial from a New Yorker
25:00
who works in a diner. She was joking. From Italy, so I thought that that was she was here. I couldn't
25:06
gauge she had no grasp of being sarcastic, sarcastic and the level at which she committed to full fucking so sarcastic. It had that vibe. And then someone said to us as we're walking out See you tomorrow. Wow. City. Yeah. The city is bipolar. It is ups and downs. very
25:28
extreme. Yeah. And it's currently right now. I don't even know what time do you know what time?
25:34
I know. Can I just know you look at your watch. You have a watch on to tell the time. It's
25:40
time now. I haven't I need to know which button I press. It's 7:54pm on Sunday. It's Monday here and we've just made it why Lynn Janssen has started following this show. Can you believe it's a new support my mom hundred 95 episodes is is amazing things. Do you think it's my because I mentioned her on the last show. On Friday show. I had said that she didn't listen. So maybe this is to say it feels like we're a little bit sleep deprived. Still. We still have a still need to catch up on sleep.
26:15
But we've got Yeah, fun trip ahead. Yeah. And I've still got one shoe off.
26:20
And it's getting cold because holding the GoPros Yeah. Hi. The Daily talk show is our email address. If you want to email us any thoughts, any tips while we're here in the States? Yeah, it's gonna go quickly, though.
26:33
Every every trip? Yeah. It's this already feels like we've been here for Diana bit, or the first actually known just over 24 hours. But it feels it feels like I don't want to waste it. So we want to do lots of stuff. But then doing lots of stuff makes you feel like it's going fast. Because you. You so stimulated.
26:51
Yeah. So
26:52
yeah, we've got we gotta go to Central Park. We didn't get to do an episode from there. If if you actually want us to do an episode from somewhere in New York and let us now
27:00
Yeah, let us know sooner rather than later because it'll be out of here. Funding if we have to come back to Los Angeles as well. And we'll probably actually in the next few episodes. Watch it have some things to talk about as well. We'll be moving around the daily talk show. We'll see you tomorrow everyone with Brad blanks. The Celebrity reporter Hey guys.
