At a glance

From this episode’s transcript.

  • –The show's long-running 'Fat Fridays' tradition dissolved after going remote during COVID-19 lockdown, replaced informally by 'Friday night drinks'; the hosts crowdsource new food-day names from listeners.
  • –Josh and Tommy discuss the legal-vs-moral tension of street photography, noting it's legal to photograph strangers in Australia but can feel ethically uncomfortable, with asking permission and smiling suggested as softeners.
  • –The hosts question why massive tech companies (Facebook, Google) are offering COVID-19 grants and credits, framing it as expected given how much these platforms profit from society and small businesses.
  • –Pandemic etiquette changes discussed include replacing handshakes with elbow/knuckle bumps, avoiding spitting and public nose-blowing, and establishing a 'sound effect' system to clarify ambiguous cheek-kiss greetings.
  • –Tommy and Josh disagree on dating advice: Tommy dismisses formulaic question lists as unnatural, while Josh argues a few good stimulus questions (not clichés) can be the foundation of a real conversation.

Questions this episode answers

Why did The Daily Talk Show stop doing 'Fat Fridays'?

According to the hosts, Fat Fridays dissipated naturally once the show went remote during the coronavirus lockdown and the team started doing Friday night drinks instead, shifting the focus from eating to drinking; they then brainstorm new food-themed day names as a replacement.

Is it legal to take photos of strangers in public in Australia?

The hosts state it is legal to photograph people in public, but they discuss the moral discomfort involved, citing an example of a man covering his face after being photographed on a tram, and suggest asking permission and smiling to ease the interaction.

What hygiene and greeting habits changed because of COVID-19, according to the hosts?

They discuss dropping handshakes in favor of elbow or knuckle bumps, avoiding spitting and public nose-blowing ('Bushman's blows'), using elbows or walking sticks to press pedestrian crossing buttons, and washing clothes immediately after being out in public.

Tommy: It's The Daily Talk Show, episode 668.

0:08

Josh: Clap it in, guys, clap it in!

0:09

Tommy: What's happening, guys? What's going on? Happy Tuesday. Yeah, we're here, we made it. 4 PM.

0:17

Josh: Oh, actually, Dodge has, uh, has joined us, uh, today. How's the, uh, how's the delay for you? It's It's still bad. It's—

0:27

Unknown: yeah, it doesn't— um, it's, it's about half a second, I reckon.

0:33

Tommy: All right, great, great. I mean, that's normal for you, even in normal conversation you take about half a second to respond.

0:39

Unknown: That's quick for me.

0:41

Tommy: Uh, Josh, you've just had an upgrade. This is, uh, digital chubby peak. Yeah, what is going on?

0:47

Josh: Full, uh, full hard digital chub.

0:51

George: But I thought we were dropping the smutty.

0:52

Tommy: Yeah, you actually decided to drop it down on it. You said full and then you thought, nah, I'm not going to to say it, and then you're like, ah, fuck it.

0:59

Josh: I'm feeling pumped because yeah, I did just, uh, get the, uh, the upgrade to 250 megabits per second. Can I get a dab up in here? Um, I did a little, uh— that's not a dab, George, that's a clap. Uh, and I did do a wipe down of my keyboard, uh, using some alcohol wipe type things after the technician. So we are all clear. We are hashtag Corona clear.

1:25

Tommy: Did you, um, did you stay clear of the room when he was in it, or did you kind of watch?

1:30

Josh: But that's just how I operate.

1:31

Unknown: Yeah.

1:32

Tommy: Was it— was there any sort of weirdness between— I mean, your apartment's quite small. Is it someone servicing, servicing it or servicing something within it? Are you, are you kind of feeling the vibe that it's like, don't go too close?

1:46

Josh: No, it was actually more— I watched a documentary last night about the FBI and talking about how they bug places and the sort of the different techniques. One of the techniques being they'll actually add static to a phone line. So, say the mafia calls up and goes, "Hey guys, like, I need some tech support because I've got static in my phone." The FBI actually intercepts that call and then they go and that's when they do the bugging. And so, I'm just like wary of any sort of people in the apartment.

2:20

Tommy: Do you think FBI activity, all this kind of, I mean, criminal activity has slowed down a lot since coronavirus? Do you think it has?

2:30

Josh: Think about drug dealers.

2:34

Tommy: Why dodge?

2:35

Josh: I know why. Moustache.

2:38

Unknown: Well, I was actually wondering how much you've been watching me with your cameras.

2:44

Josh: Not at all, actually. I sort of have a general rule. We have security cameras in the office. Not too many. I would And 97's also pointed out, since watching Tiger King, says would like to see more Big Brother style, uh, security where we can be seen everywhere. But no, Dodge, I, um, I'll just make sure it's you. The other day I thought that it was, uh, someone else coming into the building, and I just— it was just because I got you on a bad angle, and so I thought it was a, uh, a junkie.

3:16

Unknown: Feel free to watch me, it's phone.

3:17

George: Okay.

3:18

Unknown: All right. I thought you would have— I thought you would have seen me doing something weird the other day.

3:23

Josh: What'd you do?

3:24

George: What were you doing?

3:25

Unknown: I was carrying the plants around.

3:28

Tommy: Oh, that's good. I came in on the—

3:30

Unknown: Yes.

3:31

Tommy: I came in on the weekend to get a few things and I walked into the dunny and what have you done, Dodge?

3:38

Josh: Yeah, so shit everywhere.

3:39

Unknown: The plants up— Yeah, all the plants upstairs. In the shower so I can just easily—

3:46

Josh: oh, that's good—

3:47

Unknown: some water.

3:48

Josh: It's—

3:48

George: what about this?

3:51

Unknown: Yeah, I'll move him back up in a sec. Yeah, because they need him in a week, don't they?

3:54

Tommy: In a week. He's just giving it a week before he gets it. Um, Butterbean says he's here for my tanty. Oh yeah, I think— I don't know if— I don't know if, uh, do it. Oh mate, I was at the fucking fruit and veg shop the other day and I thought people were just a bit more considerate these days with how they are coming across within an environment where other people, you know, are shopping or working. This absolute gronk had a durian in his mouth, and you know the fruit shops where out the front there's like a plethora of fresh fruit in sort of like big sort of boxes?

4:33

Josh: It's hard to say, plethora of fresh fruit.

4:35

Tommy: Yeah, it's a tongue twister. Anyway, This guy wasn't saying anything because he was just walking around sucking a ciggie and blowing the smoke sort of like out over the fruit. And I told him, I said, mate, take your ciggie and go over there right now.

4:52

Josh: And what did he say?

4:53

Tommy: I got hard on him. Someone looked at me and was like, fucking yeah, well done, well done. And I had Bodhi there too. And all I needed was that older lady's, you know, agreeance. And I felt good about it. But that Absolute Gronk, mate, fucking quit your durries and get out of here. I mean, that wasn't really— that was just a light handy.

5:16

Unknown: That's about it.

5:17

Josh: I enjoyed it. Can you turn your headphones down a little bit? There's a slight echo that's annoying me, but it's not too bad.

5:25

Unknown: How's that?

5:26

Josh: That's good.

5:27

Tommy: All right, can we just have a quick board meeting? We— I mean, it's It's kind of just natively happened, but since going remote and starting Friday night drinks, Fat Fridays has kind of dissipated. What's happened? Can we— are we coming to a collective on this one? Are we just riding the corona wave and drinking our way through it versus eating our way through it? What's happening? What's going on, guys?

5:58

Josh: What's happening with cows and alcohol?

6:00

Tommy: Yeah, a lot of cows and alcohol. So are you saying that it's just morphed? It's the coronavirus iteration.

6:06

Josh: Yeah, burgers for beers, you know.

6:09

Tommy: Yeah, well, you've only done both with two shows.

6:12

Josh: That's true.

6:13

Tommy: Yeah, geez. I mean, Josh is on a health kick, which is good. I'm proud of you, mate.

6:20

Josh: Can I just say, I wouldn't— I was feeling so uncomfortable. I caught myself on camera as I was doing my jumping, I just saw, like I'm not impressed with my body. And so when I was seeing it, can I just say to everyone, it takes all my might to keep the camera on in those moments or just fucking walk away. I nearly walked up halfway just to fucking tuck my gut into my shorts. I'm like, you know what? I just need to own this. And one day, you know, let's look back at this in 6 months' time and be like, wow, like look how far Josh has come. But in the meantime, you're getting the before video, unfortunately. But no, yeah, no, the health kicks, it's going well, eating a lot of our omelets, a lot of eggs.

7:05

Tommy: That's good, I mean, Lyndon said that we should just move Fat Fridays to another day. It doesn't have the same ring to it. Is there anything that you can think of, a name? I mean, other than it being Taco Tuesday or finding a day that we just put a food to that day. That day's letter. So Monday could be Meatball Monday, you know.

7:30

Unknown: You all have to organise it individually.

7:32

Josh: It's annoying.

7:32

George: Yeah, it's a bit annoying.

7:34

Tommy: It is, it is a bit annoying.

7:36

Josh: What's another option? What about like, um, this— there's got to be something about Saturdays. S, um, So Much Food Saturdays.

7:45

Tommy: Well, you know what we could start doing is, um, There's, you know, there's a day for everything. So there's the croissant day, Nutella day, doughnut day. I mean, we're doing so many shows, we could start just sort of implementing the days in the calendar into the show.

8:04

Josh: Oh, that's good. Like, yeah, all the international days we need to dial in.

8:08

Tommy: I mean, is there— what's anything today? International day. What's the date today? 7th of April. International Day— World Health Day. Fuck, it's timely. Yeah, the World Health Organization aimed to draw attention to important health issues facing the world each year.

8:24

Josh: Really? Geez, you sure they just haven't put that indefinitely?

8:28

Tommy: Oh Jesus. Oh no, sorry, it said it's the whole of 2020 and they'd like to cancel it.

8:34

Josh: Is that really—

8:35

Tommy: No, no, no, it's just—

8:37

Josh: Is it real?

8:38

Tommy: Just a joke that George found. Even in delay, George found it funny.

8:42

Josh: Yeah, he's good. I'm still rattled from Dave Allen not laughing at my joke.

8:47

George: Oh, really?

8:47

Josh: I don't know, how do we handle when guests don't laugh at jokes or don't understand?

8:52

Tommy: You know, the funny thing is, Josh, I, I, you beat me to it. I was about to say the exact joke.

8:59

George: Yeah.

9:00

Tommy: And sometimes, like, I have, I just don't say shit sometimes just because I'm like, Josh was, Josh has got this exact comment I'm gonna make without even telling him. I just wouldn't have done the bit about the Patreon private.

9:12

Josh: I mean, whatever the opposite of rapport, whatever the opposite of rapport is, that's what that felt like, how it was received.

9:19

Tommy: It was, uh, it was, it was basically, uh, Diavella was the audience and Josh bombed his joke where they were just confused. I got it, dude.

9:30

Josh: I appreciate that Diavella doesn't. I, I said, um, the— actually, can I just close it? Breezy, Do you mind closing the door, please? There's a lot going on here. That's all good. I normally don't have the door open, but because we started the show without Bree, just went to a friend's to drop something off, so I had the door open. I got a little bit distracted there.

9:54

Unknown: Okay. Sorry.

9:56

Tommy: So yeah, you were saying, Matt D'Avella.

9:58

Josh: Was I saying something? Oh yeah, no, I can't.

9:59

George: You were saying something about D'Avella's joke, rapport.

10:03

Josh: No, I can't remember.

10:04

George: What to do. Anyway, Leah says snack time Saturday, or The Real Enkidu says munchin' Monday.

10:13

Tommy: Munchin' Monday is good. Yeah, I don't mind that. Sunday fun day was the one that, you know, it was that phrase used. Sunday fun day, just breaking my diet. That was used a lot.

10:24

Unknown: You see what everyone's eating the day after the drinks. Oh yeah, Saturday maybe.

10:30

Tommy: Um, yeah, what's a hangover Saturday?

10:32

Josh: Soggy Saturdays, and it's got to be some sort of food that's soggy.

10:36

Tommy: Well, tiramisu would get through and would be all right. It's a soggy biscuit, but it tastes good. Jesus, Jesus, there's a bit going on here, boys. Um, I just went for a walk before, uh, while you were doing your dancing, Josh. Just need to sort of get out, get a bit of that fresh air into me. A few things that I think on the other side of coronavirus we should bin, a couple of things, and open to understanding from you guys what else should be chucked in the trash can. I mean, spitting, if it wasn't already been out, definitely it's completely out. I saw two, two Gronks spit when I was out.

11:21

George: Yeah.

11:21

Tommy: One other one, which is relating to the spitting, Bushman's blows have never been so taboo.

11:28

Josh: Yuck. What's that?

11:30

George: Oh, okay. No, I know. I know.

11:32

Tommy: Do you know what a Bushman's blow is?

11:34

George: Is it one of those?

11:35

Tommy: Yeah. You hold one nostril.

11:36

Josh: That's revolting.

11:37

Unknown: Yeah.

11:37

George: Yeah.

11:38

Tommy: Yeah. I mean, tradies are going to struggle here and I don't mind a spit here and there, but sometimes, like, especially when you're exercising. Just especially when you're exercising. Um, no good, no good. Um, I saw an old geezer with a walking stick, uh, pick up his walking stick and jab at the pedestrian thingo, the button.

12:07

Josh: Oh yeah, I'm curious to know what you do because I had been doing a knuckle knock And then I realised I was using my knuckle for everything. And so, it sort of defeats the purpose. But then I also had a guy who, like, I did a knuckle knock and he did an elbow. And then I, then he made me feel self-conscious. So, I started using the elbow.

12:30

Tommy: I mean, here's the problem. On the radio this morning, I heard somebody say that you can get coronavirus on your clothes, not to create some sort of panic. But for people that work around people still, they were saying, they were suggesting, when you walk in the door, get nude, chuck your clothes into the, um, into the washing machine and wash them because it will kill the coronavirus. But so I do the bum, like I did bum today.

12:59

Josh: Oh really?

13:01

George: Hip, hip's an easy one.

13:03

Tommy: Hip, I mean If you— Muay Thai knee, just sort of like, just push your knee out, just sort of like a lunge.

13:10

George: This is Sparta kick.

13:12

Josh: Yeah, yeah, yeah.

13:12

Tommy: What's a—

13:13

Josh: This is Sparta kick.

13:14

George: Have you never seen that?

13:15

Josh: Can you show us a kick? Because you're making fun of me and how I kick in my dance moves. Can you show us—

13:20

George: That was great.

13:21

Josh: Can you show us a kick, please?

13:23

Tommy: Just do a This Is Sparta kick in the back. You got enough room? Here we go, here we go. All right, Seb's lining up for a for an absolute big Gerard Butler kick. Now go sideways, get that side. Oh yeah, that's nice. Geez, he's done a bit of kickboxing before. He even got that hip lent into it.

13:42

Unknown: Was that all right?

13:43

Josh: Yeah, that was good.

13:46

Tommy: Oh, Linden, smorgasbord Saturday.

13:49

Josh: Oh, that's good.

13:50

Tommy: I just like smorgasbord.

13:52

Josh: A smorgasbord. What is the definition of a smorgasbord?

13:57

Tommy: Smorgasbord. I just thought it was lots of cheese.

14:01

George: Smorgasbord, a range of open sandwiches and, uh, delicacies served. Yeah, okay, as a buffet.

14:11

Tommy: I think I like buffets more, but I mean, buffets could be done. Like, let's just throw a few things each of what— one, one thing each of what you'd been on the other side of this Pandemic.

14:25

Josh: Yeah, definitely like lots of people in lifts. I think, I don't know about, I don't know how I feel about the hugging, kissing, handshake stuff. I think that we could, I think we could get, no, I like hugs, handshakes. What confuses me about hugs is the grey area of kisses and handshakes. I think that what we do is we, We hug everyone and we need a clear system of when we kiss someone on the cheek.

14:57

Unknown: Yeah.

14:57

Josh: Dodge, when do you kiss someone on the cheek? How do you know?

15:03

Unknown: I'm also not very good at it. 'Cause I do the thing where you think you have to kiss them on the cheek and then you sort of both just hold your cheek next to each other. No one does anything.

15:14

Josh: Really? What do you think you could do if you were to sort of improve that? Would the sound effect, just the little, would that help?

15:21

Unknown: Yeah. Yeah. But I'm bad at making that sound as well. So, I'm relying on the other person to make the sound for both of us.

15:28

Josh: Okay.

15:29

Tommy: Yeah. I've got a few people, I've got people in my life that they present their cheek and don't, no sound. It's just the presentation, then I'm left to do all the work.

15:40

Josh: And so I think that some clarity around that. I think business-wise we could get rid of handshakes completely, but then have a sort of a general rule around who we're hugging. But I think we could open up hugging. What was that, George?

15:56

Unknown: Oh no, we just, we saw each other today for a coffee and we touched our feet together.

16:01

Tommy: Yeah, but if anyone asks, we did exercise and that's, we just you know, made our way past the coffee shop.

16:08

Unknown: So yeah, yeah.

16:09

Josh: So what's the deal with all of this? Because I, um, because Bree and I walked it to, um, the city this morning, and, um, I was saying to Bree, we were like stopping in Fed Square and just taking photos and were quite slow. And, um, there was a point where she was just stopping and reading stuff, and I was like, no, we need to look like we're exercising, otherwise, because we're in front in front of police. I'm like, we're going to get in trouble. And she thought I was just saying with the 1D. Well, yeah, like walking, if you're continually walking, that's okay. But I feel like stopping in the middle of Fed Square is maybe too much.

16:47

Tommy: Yeah, I mean, this is where you just gotta risk it for the biscuit, you know.

16:50

Josh: Yeah, a lot of bicky chat. But one thing that I'm discovering is the, um, how I really need to work on that muscle of going out and taking someone's photo. Like, it is a little bit awkward. The last photo that I took of the man on the tram. Yeah. If you look, now tell me if you think, actually, I'm curious in the comments. Let me know in the comments. This is a bit of an ethical, slight ethical issue. The last photo of the guy on the tram, if you look, his hand is on his collar. And the reason why his hands on his collar is because the next photo I got was him covering his face.

17:35

Tommy: Yeah, I mean, this is, this is the, uh, the dilemma between— and you and I— well, what is, what's legal and then what's morally right? And so you're allowed to take photos of people.

17:53

Josh: Yeah, well, that's legal.

17:54

Tommy: And so that's where— so that's what I go— I rest on that when I'm being defensive about my mis-moral choice.

18:02

Josh: Well, I said to Bram, like, you know, don't go out in public if you don't want to be photographed.

18:07

Tommy: Yeah, then you can go so hard. It's like, mate, yeah, who do you think you are? You know, put everything—

18:14

George: yeah, cover your face.

18:16

Tommy: Yeah, what about CCTV? I think there's a big This is— so you mentioned this, um, a couple of weeks ago, I think, uh, the, the gronks still swimming at beaches like Bondi, which they're not so much anymore because of the fines, but the long lens shots of— in the paper, like, these are just like normal people. They're probably like an accountant from the CBD who's just like ducked down for a swim. Now they're front and centre on news.com.au looking like a smart snug piece of shit and really trolled, and you can't do anything about it. You can't sue anyone. It's, uh, it's tough. It is tough.

18:53

George: I mean, I had a, I had a weird thought just around like privacy and stuff because the whole idea of like Google and all these big companies like Facebook and stuff knowing everything about you is real weird. But then sharing everything on a podcast and what you're up to and everything, that's all transcribed as well. And it's all transcribed, yeah. And you're sharing it to everyone. But that doesn't feel as bad as Google taking all your data.

19:20

Tommy: Well, we had someone write to us, Ruth, who bumped into Bree, she listens to the podcast, said she felt funny because she knows so much about your personal life through the podcast. So it's—

19:32

Josh: Makes sense.

19:33

Tommy: It is, I mean, it's a trade-off. Josh, I think it is a muscle you can lean into. People would be constantly like, oh, here's the guy with the camera to me, 'cause I was filming everything. And you almost have to feel, you have to push past that feeling of like, this feels a bit gross.

19:50

Josh: Ramble says, look, I normally feel bad for taking their photo, but you're legally able to. I normally try and speak to them if I'm super noticeable so they know I'm not a creep. So that's what I, so there's a photo of a guy cleaning a bin and I couldn't get a good vantage point. So I just asked him, I said, hi, do you mind if I take your photo?

20:13

Tommy: Yeah.

20:13

Josh: And Bree thinks that it was her smile when I asked and he looked over to Bree and Bree smiled and she thinks that sealed the deal.

20:21

George: Yeah. I told you, you got to smile more.

20:26

Josh: Give me something to smile about.

20:31

Tommy: The ramble also hasn't accounted for the 45-minute keynote he gave them asking for permission.

20:38

Josh: Can I just say, love you, on the, um, the big social networks and data and all that sort of thing, it is so weird. Our accountant sent some links of different initiatives, and Facebook are just doing a bunch of small business grants. Don't you think that's like sort of weird?

20:57

Tommy: I think it's nowadays, it's like if these billion-dollar businesses that are propping up some of— like, you think about the, the economy in the US assisted by businesses like Google, Amazon, Facebook, Snapchat. Like, these are some of the biggest businesses in the world, and so they, they would have to be seen as moral monsters if they're not helping in a time like this. I mean, you saw it with the bushfires in Australia. Not that it was much, but people like, uh, what's his name, Jeff Bezos. Yeah, Jeff Bezos. I was gonna call him Bald Eagle. Um, he comes, he donates something, but if you're not doing something, it's like call-out culture's real.

21:42

Josh: But I feel like this is next level. This is, this is grants, right? This is like, I think something like $50,000 grants or something you're giving.

21:49

Tommy: But so they're doing their front foot for businesses.

21:52

Unknown: Yeah, small businesses have given Facebook so much money, I'd imagine.

21:55

Tommy: Yeah, yeah.

21:57

Josh: I mean, it's great. I love it. I wonder, I wonder where— because this is one thing with within the US I find interesting how much private enterprise is being spoken about within the context of government stuff. So if you listen to Donald Trump, he's talking about, uh, 3M and all of these businesses like it's a big part of their whole plan.

22:23

Tommy: Hmm, with the 3M masks and stuff like that, they're the— yeah. The— what annoys me is, um, so Telstra—

22:32

Josh: another tanty? Is this another—

22:34

Tommy: we're getting to almost, almost. Telstra, uh, they're the biggest telco in Australia. They've been around for a very long time. They own a lot of the infrastructure. They can't— they can't deal with the volume of calls coming through, which You'd think it's like how— so for instance, the situation I'm in, I've got this exorbitant bill which is going to be halved, but I had to call up and—

23:05

Josh: why do you have a big bill?

23:07

Tommy: Oh, because they, they, they gave me a 50% discount in the buyout of my phone that I, um—

23:14

Josh: ah, sure, you know that. Did you sell it to your brother? He got it now.

23:16

Tommy: Sold it to my brother, gave me $350. Uh, good deal for an iPhone X. 10x. 10. Anyway, so I need to call up—

23:24

Josh: what have you got?

23:25

Tommy: I got the iPhone 11, mate. It's, uh, great fun.

23:28

Josh: Anyway, I need to call up George's favourite gear. That's why, yeah, George loves it.

23:34

Tommy: I need a call, and if I don't speak to somebody, they won't apply the discount, and it's just going to be on my account. Here's the thing, you can't, you can't get onto them anyway. Anyway, it's— you call, no, sorry. Too, too high call volume. Priority people first. Online, go online, they say. Go online? No, sorry, too high. And it's like, shouldn't it be— there's no regulation around. I mean, no one knew this was going to be like it is, but you'd think for bushfires and, you know, there's natural disasters, they need some sort of plan in place in the future. Like, it's You can't be a big business unless you have an ECG, emergency contingency plan for your business moving forward. Otherwise it's just, it's too much strain on everybody, their business, you know, all the customers that are under the pump. It seems, yeah, it's weird that like the, these big businesses run the puppeteers of the society. Facebook.

24:39

Josh: Illuminati. What have you been on Reddit today?

24:48

George: Sean on the live stream says Google gives charities £10,000 a month in free ads in the UK.

24:55

Josh: Yeah, that's it. I mean, the, the interesting thing was what I was trying to work out with the Facebook thing is there's a big difference between just giving credits or vouchers for your service versus giving grants or cash.

25:07

George: Yeah, so that's what I found interesting. The Facebook one is a mix of cash grants and ad credits with a value of $100 million. Yeah, but you wouldn't, you wouldn't know what is split between cash and what is credit.

25:20

Josh: Um, the, the Diavella content around the dating, I loved. Um, I feel like, uh, Dodge, you would have a lot of insights when it comes to dating questions. Best practices. Have you got any questions that you think would be great on those early days of dating someone?

25:46

Unknown: See, I'm like you, I've been out of the game for a long time. Yeah.

25:50

Josh: It doesn't mean shit, look at how I created 23 questions yesterday with little thought.

25:55

Tommy: Alright. Do you read books?

25:59

Unknown: What books do you read?

26:00

George: That's good.

26:01

Tommy: Oh God, this is—

26:02

Josh: This is— This is Dave Alastair.

26:04

Tommy: This is outrageous.

26:06

Unknown: Uh, what's your favourite movie of last year?

26:08

Josh: That's good.

26:09

George: Of last year?

26:10

Unknown: What's your favourite TV show of last year?

26:14

Josh: Yeah, seeing a pattern.

26:16

Tommy: Uh, how about asking— These are all just like, what about personal stuff about family? You growing up, you know, um, like, I mean, these are all things. This, it's, this makes it seem so silly. I, I'm, I'm just not a fan of the, uh, the fucking dating.

26:35

Josh: What are the questions that you would ask? Okay, well, what are the questions? You've been throwing a lot of shade, but I haven't heard many good questions from you, mate.

26:43

Tommy: I've, I've been on more dates than all of you boys.

26:47

Josh: Yeah, but maybe there's, there's a sign there if you're going on a lot of dates, like maybe you're not able to—

26:53

George: No, I just have to, I just The hit rate.

26:54

Josh: I don't know, I think it was—

26:56

George: you got a poor hit rate.

26:58

Tommy: Yeah. All right, Seb, shut the fuck up. Hit rate of zero at this point.

27:04

George: No, well, I think I would say one day I'll have a higher hit rate than you will.

27:09

Josh: Yeah, Seb's literally— mate, mate, you just fucked up.

27:12

Tommy: If Grace is listening, you really just fucked up. Why?

27:16

Josh: What? How has he fucked up?

27:17

Tommy: Because he just said he's gonna have a high hit rate.

27:19

George: That means no, which means I'll have a higher percentage. Yeah, yeah, one, one.

27:24

Tommy: Yeah, yeah, yeah, sure.

27:27

Josh: Um, and so what are you— no, so how do you— you give a lot of pushback on this, but I'm not here because I don't think Sims is bad. I think it's not about being bad, but we're just exploring as a team some little adjustments.

27:40

Unknown: Yeah, yeah, family stuff's good. Ask about siblings. What the parents do for work, how much cash they've got.

27:49

Tommy: That's all. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Sniffing around for that inheritance.

27:53

Josh: TJ's definitely—

27:54

Tommy: Have you got a holiday? Have you got a holiday?

27:55

Josh: How much in your super? Is definitely a question TJ asks. No, come on, TJ, give us some quite—

28:01

Unknown: dig down.

28:01

Tommy: No, I think I would be more curious about siblings and, you know, growing up. Where'd you grow up? Like, it depends on— this is all stuff you naturally cover.

28:11

Josh: So what are the questions? Just give us some— 3 easy questions.

28:17

Tommy: I don't— I think it's too simplified when you're thinking that you can just break them down into questions. I don't know, it's like—

28:24

Josh: so how do you do it? You just have a vote for—

28:26

Tommy: you just have a conversation. Oh, that's a bit much.

28:30

Josh: Nah, I mean, yeah, yeah, as a creative exercise, a bit of improv, just see if you can do it with Sebs.

28:37

Tommy: We're going on a date.

28:39

Josh: Yeah, so just ask him some questions.

28:42

Tommy: Yeah, um, Seb, where'd you grow up?

28:47

George: Am I answering?

28:48

Josh: Am I answering?

28:48

Tommy: Fuck, if this is—

28:49

Josh: if this is— Answer them. Seb doesn't— we just need to—

28:53

George: I just thought we were reeling them off.

28:54

Josh: Yeah, yeah, so keep going.

28:55

Unknown: Oh no, yeah, but the thing is, because you're buying Tommy something to work with.

29:00

Tommy: Yeah, that's the thing. That is exactly right, Dodge. It's all about— you can't be a robot. Girls don't want to, or boys don't want to data robot.

29:11

Josh: It's not about being a ro— I just don't think you're curious enough. You don't have any questions.

29:15

Tommy: You get curious, or you can ask, how you going? And then, and 2 hours later have had an amazing conversation. It's not about some sort of profound question where they say, that's a great question.

29:29

Josh: And then, how you going is your classic. You did it. How you going on Hamish? Yeah, that was the But surely you've got some others. Well, like, what are you interested— like, what are some of the areas?

29:40

Tommy: So the point is, it's— it's in regards to dating, it's— I, I— that's where I just am not, not a fan of this approach. Yeah, I'm a fan of this approach if you absolutely have nothing, if you're absolutely useless. But I believe in Seb's, you know, he's had more dates than us in the last 3 years.

30:02

Josh: I don't think it's about being useless, but But I think that you can have, like it's a game essentially. Like you can play like a fun game to get to know you.

30:12

Tommy: Yeah.

30:13

Josh: What would you be like on a, like a fast, what's it called? Speed dating. How do you think you would go with that, TJ?

30:18

Tommy: I've done speed dating. I should be, I should find the audio for that. Oh my God.

30:22

George: Do you have audio from speed dating?

30:24

Tommy: Yeah, because it was for a radio show. But should I find the audio and bring it in? That could be funny.

30:30

Josh: See what I actually ask.

30:32

George: Yeah, um, yeah, Leah said, um, tell me how you got your name. People always have a great storey about that.

30:40

Josh: That's a good one.

30:41

Tommy: Yeah, what, Mr. 97? Or, or asking the girl, how did you get your name Chloe?

30:47

George: Actually, no, there was— no, actually, there's, there's a great question around like nicknames. What do you, what are your nicknames?

30:53

Unknown: Yeah, what would your speed dating question be, Josh? First girl comes across.

31:00

Josh: Why did you decide to do this?

31:03

Unknown: Yeah, because I want to meet someone.

31:05

Josh: Yeah, that's good. Like, have you done it before? I mean, that's a very obvious one.

31:11

George: That's just the classic.

31:12

Josh: And so I hate that. So I, but I hate cliché. I do. I think the funny thing is, TJ, what you're describing is, oh, this is just so formulaic and it's got no, it's not got no conversation. Like, This is the foundation of a good conversation. Set it up, but it's not about being cliché. How you going is— it's very simple, and I understand that there is stuff in there, but having the stimulus to ask a question to then get a response, it could— so, yeah, saying, asking, so do you sleep when you go on planes? Answer that for me, please.

31:49

Tommy: Uh, sometimes.

31:54

Unknown: Depends.

31:55

Josh: Oh yeah, what do you find, like, when do you sleep well on a plane?

31:59

Tommy: Uh, after 2 Xanax.

32:02

Josh: Oh really? Do you do Xanax?

32:08

George: How many times? On what flights?

32:10

Josh: Yeah, like, would you do Xanax flying Melbourne to Sydney? Would you take 2 of them?

32:14

George: Would you do it?

32:14

Josh: Yeah.

32:16

Tommy: Jeez, am I on a double date with Source and Josh?

32:19

Josh: Yeah, he's so good at it. You know, so the Xanax thing, that's funny. When was the last time you did it?

32:27

Tommy: Um, now what I had, I had a sleeping pill on. I bumped into a friend at LAX on the way back from the States, and, uh, randomly, the guy that built our wall at the office, and he had a spare half a sleeping pill. I was like, fuck yeah. And then I woke up in Melbourne nude.

32:50

George: Where did he get his sleeping pill from?

32:53

Tommy: I don't know, the doctor. Why do you have half? Because he had a whole and he gave me half.

33:00

Josh: Oh really? That was nice.

33:01

Tommy: Um, yeah, he's a really lovely guy.

33:03

Josh: Do you watch many movies on the plane?

33:06

Tommy: Uh, depends. Fuck, I'm bored.

33:10

Josh: No, but do you know the boring bit? Is your answers. The question is actually really good. No, seriously, if you lent into it, if you actually brought the energy of like, oh, you know what, like, I— this person's been serious.

33:22

Tommy: You know what we should do? Get over the weekend Amy and Bri to step in and ask each other to reminisce back to when we dated them. I mean, for Bri, it was quite some time ago, but I think she'd still remember because you're a sweetie. And yeah, I love song dedications.

33:43

Josh: I called Mix and did, and you know, gave Bree a song dedication.

33:50

George: You got through?

33:51

Unknown: Did you?

33:51

Josh: Yeah.

33:52

George: Oh great.

33:53

Josh: What was the song? I should know, but I can't remember. I just remember texting her and saying, hey, turn on the radio right now. Right now.

34:02

Tommy: Yeah.

34:03

Unknown: But don't you think it's lovely?

34:04

Josh: Like I mean, because I'm interested in the plane stuff, I could even go further on that. Do you get anxious when you're on a plane, TJ?

34:11

Tommy: No, not at all. Yeah.

34:14

Josh: Have you ever been on a flight where someone has been anxious that you've been next to?

34:20

Tommy: Yeah, once. Once.

34:22

Josh: What happened?

34:24

Tommy: I comforted them.

34:25

Josh: Did you really? Did you know them?

34:28

Tommy: Yeah, they were sitting— Yeah, we were travelling together. Anyway, I gotta go, guys. I gotta go pick up my son. Um, no joke.

34:41

Josh: I'm glad you're not in the game anymore. All right, uh, it's a Daily Talk Show, everyone. Uh, hi@thedailytalkshow.com is the email address if you've got some— a question that we should add. I'm going to put another 10 questions up tonight.

34:54

George: Let's, let's, let's get it to 100. Can we— Gronk submissions to help us get us to get it to 100.

35:00

Unknown: So can we make it clear, is it for dating or is it just general chit-chat?

35:04

Josh: It's a get to know you. You could use it for anything, Dodge, but I think it's all—

35:08

Tommy: this is all looking in relation to dating.

35:10

George: That's why the previous partner thing's a bit full-on for just—

35:14

Tommy: no, these are dating. These are dating.

35:16

Josh: Yeah, they're definitely dating, but I think that I could ask Dodge any of those questions and I'd find it interesting.

35:23

Unknown: And so I think Red wine, red wine, by the way.

35:26

Josh: Dodge, I would like to do a bit of an Insta storey series where you go through them. Dodge, tomorrow, are you doing your very first segment for the show? Is that tomorrow?

35:36

Unknown: Yes, I'm gonna present a segment to you guys.

35:39

Josh: Okay, good. Oh, that's exciting. I'm excited for that one. All right, TJ's gotta go.

35:44

Tommy: Yeah, gotta pick up Amy. And I've gotta pick up the result of my great dating questions.

35:56

Unknown: You like that?

35:57

Tommy: Yeah, you like that. I guess we'll see you tomorrow, guys.

36:01

Josh: See you, have a good one.
