The format

What they built.

The Daily Talk Show launched on 16 January 2018 as a daily audio podcast and grew, piece by piece, into something there wasn’t an Australian template for: a long-form daily talk show, produced independently, published across audio, YouTube and live video — with its community built into the format. The show described itself on air as the first daily podcast and video talk show in Australia (episode 388). What that meant in practice:

Daily, long form

An hour-ish conversation every scheduled day for three and a half years — 1,022 episodes and 811 hours, none missed, including a four-month stretch recorded on the road in Europe. Weekdays from launch; seven days a week from July 2019 (episode 385).

Video on YouTube

On-camera episodes from December 2018 (episode 231) and a video edition of every episode on YouTube from January 2019 — treating YouTube as a primary home for a podcast well before that became standard practice.

Live production

Live streaming built into the workflow: remote live shows within days of the March 2020 lockdown, twice-daily episodes through early COVID, a 24-hour livestream, and episode 1000 delivered as a 1,000-minute live stream.

Audience as infrastructure

A named community — the Gronks — with its own segments, PO box, membership, Zoom events and a sold-out episode-500 live show. Format decisions were tested with listeners on air; when a weekly format was floated, the audience argued it down (episode 482).

A real production company

A purpose-built Abbotsford studio and a full-time team — producer, editor, GM — behind an independent daily show, plus a network of spin-off podcasts launched during the 2020 lockdowns.

Everything on the record

Format, money and growth decisions discussed openly on air — from monetisation experiments to the choice to end at 1,022 — leaving a complete, searchable record of how the show was made.
