Only talk about a story if you can offer something new or a unique angle on it; if you can't add anything fresh, don't force it just because it's trending.

Be available 24/7, be reliable about following through on commitments, don't be afraid to say no when something won't work, and consistently bring content that elevates the show rather than low-effort material.

Be willing to work for free, move to regional or far-flung markets, and put in unglamorous grunt work before any on-air opportunity comes — persistence over connections is what separates people who make it from those who don't.

What does a radio producer actually do day to day?

According to Paris Humphrey, it includes arriving early (around 4:45am) with pre-prepared story ideas, setting up studio mic packs and logging equipment, sending nightly texts and calls to a pool of about 200 VIP listeners to line up content, and working with the on-air team to develop story arcs and segment ideas.

She felt that being behind the mic for her own show was isolating and that she lacked the life experience and passion to sustain her own content, whereas she realized she had stronger ideas for other people's shows and craved being part of a bigger team, which led her into producing.
